A rising 8th grade math student, who is changing from a private school
to a charter school, was here for his third lesson. We continued
working on an old state End of Grade test by doing the sections on
Measurement and Geometry. He was excellent on his math skills.
A rising ADHD 8th grade math student arrived early for her session. We
continued reviewing problems on several old state End of Grade tests.
She was excellent on these problems by having all worked correctly.
10th grade home-schooled, who will take
Algebra II this year, came to tutoring for extra review of Algebra I.
We continued our work on a lengthy old state End of Course test for
Algebra I. He has been doing great on this by recalling much of his
learning from last year.
A
rising 6th grade math student worked on the first of his grade level’s
workbook. We did some addition of five multi-digit problems with some
having decimals and some dollars. We did subtraction practice where
borrowing was needed. And we did multiplication samples with one digit
time’s five digits, two digits time’s two digits and three digits time’s
three digits. We also worked on word problems for each of the above
problem types.
A
rising 10th grade home-schooled Algebra II student came for his tutoring
lesson. We spent our time today continuing our review of old state End
of Course Algebra I tests since his text book for Algebra I was a poor
one. He did excellent work today.
A rising 8th grader, who is
changing schools from a private system to a charter school, was here for
his first real tutoring session. We began by working problems on an
old state End of Grade test since he had never taken one and he would
have something similar this year. He was able to work all problems
correctly.
As a teacher, I emulated the great teaching
role models that I viewed from my perspective as a top-notch math
scholar. Questions (below) for which you will receive answers are from
my personal case studies. This guide may be your “missing link” to greatness for your students!
• What is going on in your child’s math class?
• What can you do to improve your child’s math skills?
• ADD and ADHD case studies – what to do, and what not to do?
• How do you learn to study math?
• How can your child gain confidence in math?
• How to know when you have an ineffective teacher?
• States: do you want results, then test the teachers not the students?
• Is your child worth your involvement in the school?
• Will the new standards program be a game changer?
• Why is the U. S. only #27 in math ranking in the world?
• Is there a State Superintendent who is ready to revolutionize our schools?

A ADHD 8th grader comes each week during the
summer despite achieving all A’s this past school year. Her parents
know the constant “focus” is changing her overall outlook on school
work. She was excited to tell she was going to a STEM camp
(Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) at a local community
college, where I used to teach. She started with me two years ago, with
her math grade in the C-/D+ range at that time. We also worked on some
old state End of Grade test problems, which she had, all of them
correct. Parents: These old state test are super study guides, as all
problems are different types of word problems. Thus each problem
presents a new challenge, requiring the students to think creatively and
remember what that was taught during the school year and apply that
knowledge. #Math #Tutor #ADHD

A rising 8th grade math student and two rising
7th grade math students each arrived for their tutoring sessions. With
each of these three, we focused on solving problems on old state End of
Grade type tests. These tests have a good variety of word problems,
which causes the students to reach back in their minds and think. Need

A rising 10th grade home-schooled student is
spending time solidifying his Algebra I knowledge by reviewing old state
End of Course tests. He did make an “A” in the same course this year
but the text book was weakly structured. This review
is forcing him to think and it will greatly help him as he moves into
Algebra II. Parents: Some school systems send students from Algebra I
to geometry (this is what is needed for S. A. T. prep). Others have
changed their progression and now have Algebra I right before Algebra II
– their students will be affected adversely by this move.

9th
grader, who took Pre-Algebra this past year, is trying to gain credit
for Algebra I (this summer) by studying the booklets provided by his
private school. Today, I talked with him as he seems to only be reading
material at home and not working any problems. I reminded him that he
is attempting to do what few students attempt, thus he has to put in an
exceptional effort by doing all the problems that the regular students
would be required to work out. Today we were on Chapter 4, with this
being just his 2nd session.
A rising 4th grade math student arrived for
tutoring 30 minutes late, as the Mom had over slept (the scheduled time
was 11 A. M.). Although the Mom does not admit her daughter has some
ADD or ADHD, all the symptoms are present. When I find
a student interrupting my teaching, I stop and ask: “Who do you think
is better prepared to help the other person – you help me or I help you?
This does cause the student to think about her rude interruption. I
mention how my job is: to help her to easily understand math; to teach
her any concepts she has had trouble solving; and to allow her to
shorten how long she will have to spend on her nightly home work
assignments in the fall. Total attention is present after that
“lecture”. Today, we spent her time going through problems on old state
End of Grade tests. She did rather well. Only on Venn Diagrams did
she say that she had not been taught that. So I indicated that she
going to understand it now and in the future, as it was easy. Need

the direction of a successful life. As for teachers reading
this book, my ambition for you is you have found bits and pieces to
make you the best teacher you can possibly be, which will hopefully
multiply your love of teaching. And for that one SPECIAL STATE

T
he U. S. has dropped to the #27 ranking
globally in math; with science and reading also in double digits
worldwide and all three are falling. To apply, begin using the
innovative strategies set forth in this book. We do not want the cutthroat
competition some countries presently have in place. America needs a
positive, dynamic leader who is not afraid to step forward nationally to
reinstate our students back towards #1. You will be recognized as a
modern day Horace Man. Are you that leader? #Math

Two 9th grade Algebra I home-schooled
students, who have finished their years and each recorded an “A”, came
for tutoring. Their algebra book was not very strong, so we did
reviewing of problems from old state End of Course tests. Each student did learn a few more concepts and re-enforced others.
Teachers: This book is full of tremendous teaching methods to help you
become a better teacher. From numerous examples, you will see this book
is a valuable resource in proper math teaching techniques, to help you
REACH EVERY CHILD!!! You may question that; however, in all my years of
teaching NO CHILD I taught ever failed math in my class. You will see
many pitfalls that entrap teachers, who become labeled as poor teachers.
You will learn to be predictable and maintain a structured teaching
routine, as opposed to “experimenting” with unproven educational
methods. Many discipline tactics are also presented.

A 7th grade ADHD Pre-Algebra student has not
had any new school worked! He stated that school was becoming boring.
We worked on some old state End of Grade tests involving algebra
problems, with some being word problems. He was excellent with these
questions.
A 9th grade home-schooled student, who has already earned an “A”
for her year-end grade, came for tutoring. Our goal for the next few
weeks is to strengthen her weak points. She will be changing to an
Early College program next fall and she may be required to take their
test on algebra proficiency.
An
8th grade home-schooled Algebra I student, who received an “A” for the
year arrived for tutoring today. He has a weakness in the basics, as he
had attended a low performing school for his first seven years. His
Mom (principal/teacher) has not decided which math course he will take
in the fall. I recommended he take geometry to help prepare him better
for the S. A. T. We spent our time solidifying his Algebra I by working
an old state End of Course test.
A 7th grade ADHD Pre-Algebra student, who
still is school, came for tutoring. His teacher has not taught any math
since their state End of Grade test on Wednesday last week. As a
matter of record, this class has had NO new curriculum instruction over
the past nine weeks (the entire grading period), as they have been
“teaching the test”!?!

An 8th grade ADHD student had his final home
work assignments today. Next Tuesday, he was supposed to have a test on
surface area and volume but his teacher “surprised” everyone by giving
it to them today!?! That change is simply not fair to the students, as even her internet page states the test will be Tuesday.

Not All Games Are Created Equal
Lisa
Nielsen - a former New York City public schools teacher and author of
Teaching Generation Text writes that "at their most basic level video
games are similar to books." Like books, vdieo games can be anything:
"trashy novels, historical fiction, non-fiction, classic literature" -
each type offering varying contributions for learning.
To test a common theory about the cause of
autism, researchers recently studied how kids with autism process moving
images. They found that the kids saw simple movements twice as fast as
their typically developing peers.
About Math Methods Wiz
From age 10 forward throughout high school and college, I continued
freely tutoring math students and made a big impact on those students’
math abilities. I never tutored just on that one problem, or test, they
had needed help with; rather, I assisted their overall understanding of
how math concepts worked together. Over and over, I kept being called a
“Math Wiz” from people who did not know each other.
At age 16, I had won a Math scholarship to college. And at age 20, I began teaching math.
In my book, Rescue Your Math Student Now, I referred to myself as a
“Math Methods Wiz.” Unbeknown to all the students (I had tutored) and
all my teachers was the fact: the “Math Wiz” part was because I made
math easy to learn. The “Methods” terminology is there because of how
closely I observed every math teacher, every minute of every day. My
desire, since age 10, was to make use of every positive “Method” (each
highly effective teacher employed) to help others to learn as simply as
possible. Rene Descartes also noted: “Divide a difficulty into so many
parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.” I wanted those I
taught and tutored to appreciate math for the power it gives their
lives. We all use math every day and it still must be precisely correct.
A note from Thales: “The primary question was not what we know, but how
do we know it.” That in a nut shell was my study: to find the How’s.
Besides my love of teaching math, I have been extremely successful in
the business world! I have been listed in Marquis’ Who’s Who in the
South and Southeast, along with 100′s of: awards, honors,
recognitions and trips won. (Side Note: all these other successes were
directly related to my devotion to be really good at math; for those
same characteristics are adaptable to any other endeavor.) I have been
fortunate enough to be ranked at the top of five national companies,
through hard work and dedication. Between those business ventures, I
continued to return to my love of math teaching and helping others
obtain a sparkle in their eyes – because they had finally grasped math.
Recall: I never wanted my math assistance to be a one shot fix for
anyone. My goal has always been to help students become “confident in
their own ability” to go forth, knowing they can master math.
Years ago, I had many friends surprise me with a party! After a short
presentation speech: thanking me for what I had done for this group,
they gave me a small book. The Go-Getter by Peter B. Kyne
was this jewel, about things I had always strived to do for others. You might just enjoy reading this too.
I sincerely hope your child will become the “REAL WINNER” from me
sharing my experiences in “Rescue Your Math Student Now“. I trust you
will take these examples to lead your child in the direction of a
successful life. As for teachers reading this book, my ambition for you
is you have found bits and pieces to make you the best teacher you can

A 7th
grade ADHD Pre-Algebra student came to tutoring a little down. Upon
questioning, he stated that someone had been bullying him this week. I
told him to have a private conference with the guidance counselor. He
had to complete a few exercises in Study Island. Then we spent the
remaining time working problems from an old state End of Grade test. He
did well on these equation problems.
A 9th grade Algebra I home-schooled student
has finished her school year but she may have to take a math placement
test for an Early College school for next year. Her Mom had printed
numerous problems off an internet site which we completed.
Also, we worked on problems from an old state End of Course Algebra I
test. She did very well on all these problems. #ADHD #Math Rescue

A 5th grade student had no math assignment
again. We spent our time reviewing an old sample of the End of Grade
state test. During this time, I had the student involved in the
solution and if they have difficulties, I helped them adopt a reasoning
method to solve similar problems. In my tutoring years, no student has
ever failed the state tests, yet many have first come to me with having
never passed a state test, on either the 1st or the 2nd attempts!
The
two home schooled students, who attend a certified teacher’s class one
day a week, were working on their final test. They have two more
classes and they will continue to come for tutoring through the end of
May. The girl had most of her take home test completed and only had a
couple of arithmetic errors. The boy had been lazy and procrastinating,
as he had only half the test worked – so he merited a lecture from me.
A 6th grade student had no class work since
last week. We started doing some old tests on the state’s End of Grade
test. She did pretty well but needed some assistance to understand a
few problems. Here is yet another school without text
books and it has a huge negative effect on learning. This student is
an honor roll student but she could be all A’s with proper educational
practices. Rescue Your Math Student Now [Paperback] http://www.amazon.com/Parents-Teachers-Guide-Rescue-Student/dp/0988316242
A 7th grade ADHD Algebra I student had no work
covered in class for the fourth straight week!?! Where is the
principal, who is supposed to know what is happening in her classrooms?
Does she NOT check over the state mandated lesson plans and do the
required class room observations? We spent yet another tutoring session
in reviewing old state End of Course exams, which he did very well on
and he is always independent with: “I have got this.”
An 8th grade ADHD Pre-Algebra student came
with four home work sections today. He will have a test on Thursday and
the teacher is just “throwing” a lot of material at the students.
Thus, this will lessen a positive effectiveness of the test.
This young fellow would really wants to earn an “A” on his final
grading period and this is his first grade on that report card. Too
many teachers seem to merely go through the motions and are NOT truly be
interested in the “life-long” effect their sloppy habits can have on
their students. Rescue Your Math Student Now [Paperback] http://www.amazon.com/Parents-Teachers-Guide-Rescue-Student/dp/0988316242

A 7th grade ADHD Pre-Algebra student has had a
tough week. Monday, he hurt his writing hand and it is swollen and
bruised. He is dealing with emotional issues, where his separated Dad
pays very little attention to him on visits and he does
not wish to visit him. But most depressing for this brilliant boy is
his teacher had spoken out loud in the class about his ADHD early last
week!!! This embarrassed him greatly and he still had not overcome this
crushing blow, thus he has not been doing his work. His Mom had taken
away everything: his gymnastics, his cell phone, all privileges and his
computer games. The Mom and I converse frequently and today (hopefully)
after I talked to him about his many talents and shutting out the
negative things and labels, he is back on track and he feels good about
himself again. The Mom will be emailing the principal about the
teacher’s part, in demeaning this boy about his ADHD. Rescue Your Math

Two home school Algebra I students, who attend
a class once a week with a certified teacher, had a take home test to
turn in at their next class. The young lady had a few problems she
needed some directions to complete. The young fellow had
skipped several problems, so we returned to similar problems he had
already worked. Rescue Your Math Student Now [Paperback] http://www.amazon.com/Parents-Teachers-Guide-Rescue-Student/dp/0988316242
An 9th grade ADHD Algebra I student brought in
a four-page quiz to tutoring, which had been graded by fellow students
in an exchange of papers style!!! (Why is this teacher NOT interested
in finding out exactly what her students do NOT understand, so she can
re-teach weaknesses?) This teacher also violated ethics in that she
called the students’ names out loud and the other person had to verbally
report the scores! The teacher did NOT bother to work out or allow any
questions about these problems that were missed (that is a missed
“Teachable Moments”) – this is part of what we covered in tutoring.
Just how lazy can this teacher become – all she did was record the quiz
grades? This student’s mid-term Progress Report has him on the A – B
Honor Roll.
An 8th grade math student was here today with
her teacher “still in park” and nothing new being taught for three weeks
now. This young lady scored an “A” in Pre-Algebra last year and the
principal told her Mom there was no room in Algebra I
for her. So she was demoted with that “A” and assigned to take 8th
grade general math! This is another class with no text books and the
little work they have covered has been based on work sheets, with have
been Pre-Algebra sheets. I took today’s tutoring time to advance her in
to graphs with inequalities and solving simultaneous pairs of equations
by substitution and elimination methods. This will greatly assist her
when they finally place her in Algebra I next year, where she absolutely
should have been this year. PARENTS: DO NOT let these teachers and
principals get away with this type of sorry use of a brilliant student.
“A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”
Two 9th grade home schooled Algebra I
students, who attend a certified teacher’s class once a week, came today
to work on their test for Monday. The young lady was much better
prepared than the guy; however, she missed several sample problems. On
the previous test, these two scored 99 and 97.
A 7th grade Algebra I student was having
difficulty with algebra problems having variables on both sides of an
equations. Again, with a little instruction he did those type problems
perfectly. PARENTS: Why are students NOT being taught these
same things by the paid teachers? This student had a one and a half
hour 48 problem test. The teacher was absent and a substitute sat in to
monitor. My student confided in me that he ONLY finish 29 of the
problems. Knowing he was a very sharp math person who simply lacks
self-confidence, I asked him why? He said that when he was working on
#29, he looked up toward the ceiling (thinking) - the sub noticed and
immediately ASSUMED he was cheating off the boy beside him. After this
sub took both papers from the boys, my student found out the other boy
was only working on problems #15, so there is no way he was cheating.
PARENTS: Is your student being treated poorly in the classroom? You
NEED to know what is really going on in every class.
Two 9th grade home schooled Algebra I
students, who take a Monday class under a certified teacher, came
separately for tutoring. They each had turned in a test on Monday and
were working on their assignments for the week. One student had trouble
with factoring but a little prompting and he did the problems correctly
with no other help.
A 7th grade Algebra I student’s teacher is
stuck and NOT moving the class forward. This class has been on the very
same problems for the past three weeks. Based on the new standards and
state curriculum, there is a prescribed new concept that
is “supposed” to be taught each class day. PARENTS: You need to check
on your student’s math class to see if your child is being cheated out
of the education the state requires to be taught. Sorry teachers still
exist in our schools and they are far many more of them than you can
fathom.
The two 9th grade home schooled students, who
take a class once a week under a certified teacher, each came for
tutoring today. Their test grades from last week were 99 and 97. Both
were working on factoring. I showed each how to factor the difference
of two squares, both by the rule and an example. From there they were
able to solve those problems independently.
The 8th Pre-Algebra student, who has been here
each day this week to prepare for a Chapter Test, said he felt really
good that he most likely made a top grade. His teacher still will
assign homework from that same chapter after the test! Today was a
surprise because three work sheets were word problems with simple basic
operations.
