The two 9th grade home schooled students, who
take a class once a week under a certified teacher, each came for
tutoring today. Their test grades from last week were 99 and 97. Both
were working on factoring. I showed each how to factor the difference
of two squares, both by the rule and an example. From there they were
able to solve those problems independently.
The 8th Pre-Algebra student, who has been here
each day this week to prepare for a Chapter Test, said he felt really
good that he most likely made a top grade. His teacher still will
assign homework from that same chapter after the test! Today was a
surprise because three work sheets were word problems with simple basic
operations.
Stroke of Genius YES! Students at the Beth and
Horace Stubblefield Learning Center will be greeted by Huntington
artist Louie Short’s rendition of Albert Einstein, along with
inspirational quotes about math.
How much homework is too much? A 7th grade
girl informed me she received an “A” in math on her report card. Today
she had three work sheets to complete for homework.
An 8th grade ADHD Algebra I boy took a test
last Wednesday but he has no score nor has he been given back his test
paper. He has recently started with me, after having “F’s” on his first
two report cards. His school is like none other I have experienced, as
they are extremely strictly structured to the point that the individual
students do NOT matter, ONLY their rules. Whatever happened to “No
Child Left Behind.”
